It actually changed construction and building technology.
I had just started a 3 floor concrete construction and the re enforced rebar we had to put in was like nothing I had even done or seen. I questioned the engineer asking to let us go lighter. He said the earthquake in Chile changed everything and I had to figure out how to bend this 1" rebar and tie it all together.
I then looked into his claims and many of the structures in Chile failed at the base of the buildings do to not having enought rebar. The cement crumbled and the structures caved in like a controlled demolition.
I think many of these structures in east Asia are using low grade cement and rebar. This may have something to do with these buildings collapsing. The building regulations are lax in many 3rd world countries.
I am willing to bet many other buildings will be condemned after engineers inspect the footings. 6-7 Richter magnitude is crazy. I have witnessed them and seen my Jeep jumping around in the yard like a frog.
I am willing to bet many other structures suffered extreme damage and can't just have patches of cement put on them like icing a cake.

But I've been involved in construction, and to have concrete and Rio turn into dust - just from gravity, is odd.
I could be wrong, though... I am far from an expert in this field.
Demolishing concrete with Rio running through it is quite difficult, even when the structure is substantially weakened.
I've personally done residential (small scale) demolitions... Its not easy to demolish even small structures, with machinery, let alone gravity alone.
